SUMMARY:  The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) seeks a highly experienced individual to lead the Association’s programmatic efforts to ensure all students have access to high quality education. This position reports to the Executive Vice President, Programs.

The NAACP National Education Program strives to ensure that all students have access to an equal and high-quality public education through advocacy training, policy development and guidance, building collaborative networks, and direct action to eliminate education-related racial and ethnic disparities in our public schools.  This is the only dynamic play advocacy policy development program in this country since Brown vs. BOE leading voice on equality and fairness.

The current and ongoing work of the Education Program which includes:

  • Working to increase Teachers’ diversity
  • Combating discipline disparities that impact to children of color
  • Implementation of  New ESSA guidelines
  • Weigh In-“The Reauthorization of Higher Education Act”

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:  Under the direction of Executive Vice President, Programs, the Sr. Director of Education’s duties and responsibilities include the ability to, but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop and deliver education policy/program initiatives in accordance to the NAACP best practice standards, mission and goals
  • Lead the development and implementation of  new initiatives and strategy directives to support any/all key business priorities of the NAACP
  • Define and ensure use of standard methodologies and processes
  • Develop and implement long term goals, best practices and innovative, creative learning strategies to drive continuous improvement and effectiveness of programs to ensure overall growth and successful outcomes
  • Oversee and manage departmental budget to support operations within the NAACP Education Department
  • Monitor and assess the impact of Local, State and Federal Education Policy on the  African American Community
  • Monitor, assess and identify current and future departmental training and development needs; prioritize training efforts and effectively allocate resources
  • Direct the development of education policy reports, manage the core professional learning and curriculum/training materials and other advocacy tools demand, delivery capacity and implementation across the organization
  • Consult with the NAACP Education Development Staff to develop, create and implement diversified funding proposal strategies to ensure continuous programmatic offerings and game-changing business results
  • Lead and develop the NAACP Education Department towards innovative training and successful training solutions through long term goals to ensure overall success
  • Increase the capacity of the NAACP units to promote NAACP’s education advocacy agenda at the state and local level, as well as college campuses
  • Build and maintain relationships with key leaders, government officials and community organizations in an effort to advance the NAACP’s education advocacy agenda
  • Supervise staff and contractors within the Education Department; provide leadership, executing a high degree of recommended resolutions and/or escalations
  • Represent the Association at external meetings, conferences and conventions
  • Manage the growth, program effectiveness: delivery satisfaction, transfer of knowledge and success back of the NAACP Education Department and Educational Advocacy Agenda

QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate for this position will possess many, if not all, of the following professional qualifications, competencies and personal qualities:

  • Graduates degree in law, public policy or education is preferred
  • 10+ year’s professional experience and business expertise working on respective educational issues within the non-profit, legal, academic or governmental sectors
  • Established credibility working with federal or state policymakers
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills
  • Thorough and working knowledge of State, Federal and Civil Rights policies and case laws on educational issues
  • Proven sound leadership skills and ability to manage staff and budgets
  • Ability to manage multiple large scale projects; demonstrate thoughtful judgment in strategic planning and management of initiatives and efficient, effective coordination/collaboration
  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving and communications skills
  • Ability to travel upon request
