The Hour of Code is finally here, and I haven’t been this excited since the first time in 2013! Who could imagine when we started this journey how much our global community would accomplish in 5 years? To celebrate the momentum, join us as we kick off Computer Science Education Week and make history with the biggest Hour of Code yet.
24,000 teachers, and nearly 200 governments, school districts, universities, and organizations pledge to expand CS for millions of students worldwide.
Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, and Montana have pledged to expand computer science in schools, joined by 82 U.S. school districts and 69 nonprofits, companies, and universities. Internationally, 25 partners in 20 countries pledged to expand CS programs for nearly 6,000 teachers. In total, these pledges will affect nearly 3 million students. An additional 24,000 teachers have pledged to expand computer science programs in their individual schools and classrooms.
Join the livestream!
Watch the CSEdWeek kick off in Seattle with Melinda Gates, Brad Smith, and the 2018 Champions of Computer Science winners. Tune in on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube today at 10:30am PST.
Code your own dance, featuring Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and more!
This year we collaborated with Amazon Future Engineer* on a very special tutorial, Hour of Code: Dance Party! We’ll get classrooms moving as millions of students code and dance to 30 hits from top artists. Even adults can enjoy this uniquely creative activity – whether you’re an experienced coder or a newbie, check it out.
An hour is only the beginning!
Help students understand technology, and empower them to create their own apps and games. You don’t need prior experience – we’ll help you start teaching a unit, make it a part of your weekly schedule, or add a whole new course at your school. We have fantastic curriculum available at no cost for kindergarten through high school and 90% of teachers rate our workshops “the best professional development ever.” Expand CS in your school.
Inspiration for your classroom
We’re happy to announce this year’s posters are available with a 50% off discount and Prime shipping. Inspire budding computer scientists in your school year-round with inspiring figures like Stephen Curry, Malala Yousafzai, and Shakira. Hang them in your classroom to create an inclusive environment, or in school hallways to encourage more students to try CS.
Internationally, our posters are available for printing.
We also have a network of volunteers that you can invite to your classroom to help students see firsthand where computer science can take them in the future.
Great news from the G20!
Code.org was honored to present to the G20 Education Ministers (representing 70% of the world’s schools), and to invite students to introduce the ministers to computer science. The G20 Education Ministers’ Declaration recommended the integration of “computing and coding skills within the curriculum,” adding to the global consensus around computer science. Watch the video of the event and my full speech.
Thank you
Lastly, I want to thank you for being a part of the computer science movement. Together, we’ve introduced hundreds of millions of students to this foundational subject, setting and breaking records in participation and diversity. And that first hour of inspiration has sparked worldwide change: updated school curriculum, set state and national policies, and won the support of presidents and world leaders. None of this would be possible without you, our supporters, and especially our generous donors (if you haven’t made a contribution yet, please consider it!).
As of this week, 1 million teachers have begun teaching on Code.org. To all of you, an extra special THANK you, from the very bottom of my heart, for the amazing work you do for our children every day.

A community forum on school pushout of Black Girls in Virginia
Follow us on...
Please join Delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy and the National Women’s Law Center for a community forum on school pushout. Too many girls are pushed out of the classroom because of stereotypes, bias, and unnecessarily harsh discipline policies. In Virginia, Black girls are 5.2 times more likely to be suspended than white girls, and there is no evidence that they misbehave more often.
